Leonard Weikart had briefly played baseball as a catcher with the Mansfield Haymakers of the Class B Interstate League. In 1898, he served with an artillery company in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. It was during this time that he contracted Yellow Fever – an infection spread by mosquitoes – and died on August 1, 1898.
