James E. Taylor was born in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania in 1913. He
graduated from Jenkintown High School in 1932 and entered Dickinson
College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Taylor pitched for the varsity team
while at Dickinson and graduated in 1936.
He went to work for the Pennsylvania Company as a credit analyst and
enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1942. Taylor was commissioned a
lieutenant in September 1942.
First Lieutenant Taylor was sent to the Pacific in January 1944 and
served in the Marshalls and on Saipan. He was leading his platoon on the
landings at Tinian on July 23, 1944, when he was shot by a Japanese
sniper. James Taylor died on board a hospital ship two days later,
leaving a wife and four year-old son.
James Taylor was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart.
He is buried at the Honolulu Memorial in Hawaii.
