Larry M. Smith was born on August 29, 1946 in Glendora, California. He attended Glendora High School and broke into professional umpiring at the age of just 18, when he joined the Pioneer League in 1965. The following year the youngster was with the California League, but a promising career as an official was put on hold when he entered military service in July 1967.

Serving as a Private First Class Medical Corpsman with 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantrty, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, Smith was killed from multiple fragmentation wounds on August 23, 1968 at Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam. He was six days shy of his 22nd birthday.

Larry Smith is buried at Oakdale Cemetery in Glendora, California.
