Howard F. Shea was born in Medford, Massachusetts in 1917. He attended Medford High School and was a well-known semi-pro player in the local area.

Shea entered military service in March 1941 and served in the Pacific with the 182nd Infantry Regiment, the oldest regiment in the United States Army. Corporal Shea was killed in action during the Battle of Guadalcanal on November 21, 1942.

Corporal Shea is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford, Massachusetts.
