Conrad M. “Con” Radocy was born in Aerial, Alberta in 1918. He was a
well known all-around athlete in Drumheller Valley having played
baseball and hockey for Rosedale teams.
From 1936 to 1939 he pitched and played the outfield for the Nacmine
Juniors, helping them to the Alberta junior baseball playoffs. In 1940
he was playing junior baseball with the Rosedale Midways.
He attended the Red Deer military training center and enlisted on
November 10, 1940. He married Vera Tyson on December 31 1941 at the
Pro-Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary, and they had a
daughter, Darlene. Radocy was later stationed at
Winnipeg before going overseas.
Gunner Radocy died in France on July 28, 1944 of wounds sustained on
July 23. He is buried at the Beny-Sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in
Calvados, France.
A memorial service was held at home at Knox Church in August. Reverand H
V Ellison of Rockyford, conducted the service. “Conrad Radocy will be
much missed in this district,” declared the Drumheller Mail on August
17, 1944. “He was highly respected by all who knew him. His sterling
qualities endeared him to his friends.”
