Shigeji Matsushita (Matushita) was born on August 16, 1916 in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. He attended Akashi Chugakkou high school and Hosei University before signing with Hanshin in 1941.

The right-handed hitting outfielder played 63 games that year and batted .167 with 11 RBIs. Matushita was drafted into military service in 1941 and died in combat.
