Lester W. Allen was a well-known semi-pro ballplayer from Chicago. He served with the 5th Regiment, 2nd Division of the US Marine Corps and was deployed to France in 1917. In the spring of 1918, the regiment was involved in the fierce battle of Belleau Wood, and later participated in the offensive campaign at Aisne and the Battle of Saint-Mihiel. It was during the Meuse-Argonne offensive that Private Allen was killed in action on October 3, 1918.

Private Lester Allen is buried at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, France.
